UMNO vice-president Mahdzir Khalid today denied claims that there was internal pressure to sack Bera MP Ismail Sabri Yaakob from the party’s leadership.

He said these were mere lies spread by irresponsible parties believed to be aiming to destabilise Umno in the run-up to the next general election.

“That’s all a lie; pity the prime minister (Ismail Sabri Yaakob). There are people who are doing (spreading) this on ​​social media.

“It’s like this, there are people taking advantage of the current situation to divide (Umno), ” he said at a press conference after the signing of the memorandum of understanding between Majlis Amanah Rakyat and Tenaga Nasional Bhd today.

When asked about the agenda of Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s special briefing with divisional committee members and leaders at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur tomorrow, he said the meeting is being held to strengthen the party.
